An Ecotherapy-Based Recreational Program For Latino Youth: Sanar Juntos Con Naturaleza
Summary
This thesis is a grant proposal for Sanar Juntos con Naturaleza, an ecotherapy-based recreational program designed to support the mental health and well-being of Latino youth aged 13-17 in East Los Angeles. The program seeks funding to teach Latino youth skills to improve their mental health, incorporating evidence-based therapeutic modalities like nature meditation, forest bathing, and art therapy. It aims to address the mental health disparities faced by this vulnerable population, which have been exacerbated by socioeconomic challenges, lack of access to mental health services, and environmental inequities. The program involves parents or guardians to reinforce the skills learned and takes a critical race approach to address the needs of this population.
The program’s objectives are to educate Latino youth about social and emotional skills, teach positive coping strategies, promote support and resiliency, and increase access to support and resources. The program will run for a year, and include activities such as storytelling, horticultural therapy, and hydrotherapy while taking trips to local state parks and nature areas. The grant proposal includes implementation strategies, staffing, a budget, and evaluation plans, with the Outdoor Equity Grants Program identified as a potential funder. The goal is to empower Latino youth and their families to utilize ecotherapy as a form of healing, empowerment, and education to maintain their mental health and well-being.
