Digging Deeper: Gardening as a Way to Develop Non-Human Relationships Through Connection with Nature
Summary
This research paper explores the relationship between gardening and wellbeing, focusing on how gardening can foster a connection between individuals and nature. It investigates the potential of gardening to provide meaningful connections outside of human relationships, which has significant implications for those at risk of isolation and loneliness. The study involved semi-structured interviews with 25 gardeners to explore their experiences. Thematic analysis revealed key themes such as connection, awareness, contribution, and being self, all of which support a meaningful relationship between the gardener and the garden.
The study suggests that gardening offers a unique opportunity to develop a deeper connection with nature, which can enhance wellbeing. This connection is fostered through intentional engagement and can lead to increased mindfulness, happiness, and the ability to reflect on life’s problems. The research highlights that the human-nature relationship in gardening mirrors many beneficial aspects of human relationships, offering a sense of purpose, reducing isolation, and providing a space for self-expression.
