RESEARCH
Growing Health in UK Prison Settings
Summary
The research explores how prison-based horticulture can improve well-being, reduce stress, and support reintegration for incarcerated individuals. Through focus groups and interviews with prisoners and staff, findings reveal that participation in GOOP led to greater emotional stability, increased physical activity, and a sense of accomplishment. Prisoners reported feeling more relaxed, connected to nature, and motivated to develop skills, while staff observed better behavior and engagement among participants.
Beyond personal benefits, the program enhanced employability by teaching gardening, teamwork, and work-readiness skills. Some participants expressed interest in pursuing gardening or environmental work post-release, highlighting GOOP’s potential for long-term rehabilitation. The study supports expanding horticultural therapy in correctional facilities, emphasizing its role in mental health promotion, social inclusion, and reducing recidivism
