Therapeutic Landscape as a Healthcare Facility in Egypt: Design and Evaluation Process
Summary
This study aimed to develop design considerations for therapeutic gardens in healthcare facilities, particularly in Egypt where such guidelines are lacking. The researchers conducted a comprehensive literature review to compile general and specific design considerations for various types of therapeutic gardens, including those for Alzheimer’s patients, the elderly, cancer patients, mental health patients, and children.
The study then applied these considerations to evaluate the Children’s Cancer Hospital garden in Egypt (CCHE) using an innovative approach that combined post-occupancy evaluations (POEs) with an audit tool. This method incorporated visual analysis, behavioral observation, and questionnaires to assess the garden based on four main criteria: site, users, operations, and evaluation. By integrating an audit tool with traditional POEs, the researchers aimed to create a more comprehensive evaluation process that could serve as a guide for future research and landscape architects designing therapeutic gardens for pediatric cancer hospitals.
