WELL-BEING THROUGH PLANTS
Summary
This thesis project focused on creating a therapeutic balcony with plants for underaged asylum seekers living in a supported housing unit in Helsinki. The main objective was to establish a peaceful plant-dominated area while involving 3 participants in plant-based activities to impact their well-being positively. The project utilized principles of green care emphasizing contact with nature, meaningful activities, and social interaction.
The implementation involved planning and creating the balcony space with plants, and conducting plant-based activities with the selected participants. The author evaluated the project through feedback from the working life instructor and personal reflection. Results showed that the balcony successfully served as a peaceful and therapeutic area for all residents of the housing unit. For the participants actively involved, the activities and time spent with the author were reported as important and meaningful. The author concluded that the project’s aims were achieved and recommended similar projects in the future, noting the potential benefits of plant-based activities and nature for individuals’ well-being.
