Meta-Analysis of Controlled Trials Testing Horticultural Therapy for the Improvement of Cognitive Function
Summary
This meta-analysis investigates the effect of horticultural therapy on improving cognitive function, addressing the global challenge of cognitive impairment in the aging population. The methodology involved a comprehensive search to identify controlled trials (both randomized and non-randomized) that examined the impact of horticultural therapy on cognitive function. After qualitative synthesis and feasibility evaluation, nine articles were selected for the final analysis.
The meta-analysis revealed that horticultural therapy programs significantly improved cognitive function compared to control groups. Though studies were limited to Asian countries, and the trials were non-randomized, the analysis showed no significant heterogeneity or publication bias, suggesting the robustness of the findings. The authors conclude that horticultural therapy should be considered an important intervention for improving and preventing the decline of cognitive function, urging healthcare systems and policymakers to recognize its potential.
