Therapeutic Gardening in English Prisons Post-Pandemic: Implications for Health and Wellbeing
Summary
This paper examines the impact of the “Greener on the Outside for Prisons” (GOOP) therapeutic horticulture program on prisoner health and wellbeing in four English prisons, both during and after the COVID-19 lockdowns. The study used qualitative methods, gathering data through in-depth narrative-based interviews and focus groups with prisoners and staff. The audio data was transcribed and analyzed thematically.
The thematic analysis revealed five key themes: reimagining the GOOP context, increasing empathy between participants, building a sense of coherence, reconnecting with nature, and building a connection with provider services. Findings emphasized that horticulture in prisons remains under-utilized for promoting health and wellbeing, despite staff enthusiasm for providing green spaces to prisoners. The research highlights the significant health and wellbeing benefits of participation in such activities within the challenging prison environment.
