Empathize and Then Design

The article found that after experiencing a virtual simulation of dementia, caregivers were significantly more likely to report increased empathy and intention to provide patient-centered care. Specifically, participants said they would be more patient, take more time with residents, and improve communication. These improvements led to measurable behavioral changes among patients, including increased engagement, better wayfinding, and reduced aggression. The findings underscore how immersive training and empathetic design can dramatically enhance quality of care for people with neuro-cognitive disorders.
