Summary

This paper explores gaps in consumer horticulture (CH) knowledge and the involvement of public gardens in CH. The researchers conducted two surveys: one targeting CH researchers and extension personnel, and another aimed at public garden staff. The first survey revealed that while there’s a general understanding of CH, many participants didn’t fully grasp its role in the economy and recreation. The biggest knowledge gap was in basic horticultural practices, and lack of funding and support were identified as major hurdles for CH research. The second survey showed that public garden professionals aren’t very familiar with CH and the National Initiative for Consumer Horticulture (NICH), highlighting a need for better education and outreach in this area.

The study suggests several steps to address these issues, including presenting findings to key stakeholders, increasing outreach through various channels, and educating public garden professionals about CH. The researchers emphasize the importance of consistent CH messaging and the potential for public gardens, which collectively host about 120 million visitors annually, to play a significant role in promoting CH if properly engaged and educated.
