Cultivating Connections: Exploring the Impact of Community Gardens on Social Cohesion
Summary
This study explores the impact of a community garden on social cohesion within a socio-economically disadvantaged neighborhood in Sweden. The research involved qualitative methods, including interviews and observations at the Tensta Community Garden. Participants were selected from the gardeners and community members involved in the space. Activities within the garden included shared gardening practices and communal projects.
The study found that the community garden serves as a catalyst for building relationships, encouraging participation, and fostering connections among residents, despite broader societal segregation. It highlights the garden’s role in promoting social cohesion and a sense of belonging within the neighborhood, demonstrating how residents mobilize through everyday activities to create a safe and supportive environment. The research suggests that community gardens can be an integral component of a broader strategy to address social inequalities at the grassroots level.
