Indoor Horticultural Therapy for Older Adults Living in a Nursing Home: Bedside Structured Floral Arrangement Program
Summary
This research looked at how a simple flower arranging activity done at the bedside could help older adults with dementia in a nursing home. Many older adults with dementia live in nursing homes, and activities like gardening can be hard for them to participate in. The researchers created a special indoor flower arranging program where the participants chose flowers and arranged them in foam. They wanted to see if this activity could improve the patients’ quality of life and reduce feelings of depression.
The study involved 16 older adults in a nursing home, some of whom participated in the flower arranging activity, and some who did not. The researchers found that those who did the flower arranging showed improvements in their quality of life and had fewer symptoms of depression after just one session. The nursing home staff also noticed that some of the participants seemed to enjoy activities more, eat better, and show less frustration after the flower arranging.
