“It’s about community”: Exploring social capital in community gardens across Melbourne, Australia
Summary
This qualitative study explored social capital in six urban community gardens in Melbourne, Australia. Twenty-three participants were interviewed to understand the social capital stocks, mutual support, social networks, and community connections associated with these gardens. The study aimed to understand how the experiences of community gardeners shape social capital in these settings, addressing a gap in Australian research.
The research indicated that community gardens are seen as places for social interaction and support, fostering connections and a sense of community. Members identified factors reducing social capital, such as exclusion, lack of support, and vandalism. While the study confirmed social capital benefits, differentiating between bridging, bonding, and linking social capital proved difficult, suggesting further research is needed to inform policy changes that enhance social capital and community gardening.
