Nature-Based Integration of Migrants: A Cross-National Systematic Literature Review
Summary
This systematic literature review examined nature-based integration of migrants globally. 42 studies were analyzed to understand nature activity patterns, the impact of nature experiences on integration, and potential hindrances. The researchers used Web of Science and Scopus databases to find peer-reviewed studies, and extracted data based on thematic groups.
The review found that walking, sports, and gardening were the most reported physical activities among migrants, but activity patterns varied by ethnicity and individual. Nature activities promoted integration through social interaction, emotional attachment, and a sense of belonging. Hindrances included discrimination, accessibility issues, and lack of information. The authors concluded that nature activities have positive impacts on migrant integration, but further empirical evidence is needed to shift from nature-based integration to nature-based inclusion, which requires a participatory approach to incorporate migrant voices and experiences.
