Perceived Benefits of Accessing a Children’s Sensory Garden in a Healthcare Setting
Summary
This study looked at how a children’s sensory garden in a healthcare setting in Melbourne, Australia, benefited both parents and staff. The garden was designed to stimulate the senses through elements like music, sand, and plants, giving families a place to relax and play together. Researchers surveyed 36 parents and 19 staff members, and also interviewed four staff to find out what kind of impact the garden had. Both parents and staff said the garden helped them feel happier, less stressed, and provided a calm escape from the clinical indoor environment.
Parents also felt the garden helped them bond with their children through play and sensory activities, and staff reported it made their work environment more enjoyable. Many participants said the garden made the setting feel more natural and home-like, rather than a hospital. Staff also noticed more meaningful conversations and engagement with families happening in the garden space. Overall, the findings support including similar green spaces in healthcare settings to improve well-being for both caregivers and healthcare workers.
