    Summary

This qualitative study investigated the value and meaning of a Greenhouse Program, a horticultural therapy initiative, for residents with severe and persistent mental illness at a long-term adult inpatient psychiatric facility. Researchers interviewed eight participants and two occupational therapists involved in the program. The study explored the program’s impact on the achievement of recovery goals, the overall value of the program, and its meaning to the participants.

Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, using open-ended questions to gather descriptive information about the experiences of participants and therapists. Participants engaged in activities such as watering, transplanting, planting seeds, pruning, weeding, and participating in community sales, either individually or in groups. The interviews explored how the program affected participants’ recovery goals, their perceptions of its benefits, and any personal changes they experienced as a result of their involvement.
