View Through a Window May Influence Recovery from Surgery
Summary
This study investigated the impact of window views on recovery after cholecystectomy, comparing 23 patients with a window view of trees to 23 matched patients with a view of a brick wall. Researchers gathered data on hospital stay length, nurses’ notes (categorizing them as positive or negative), analgesic use (doses and strength), and minor post-surgical complications.
The results indicated that patients with a view of trees experienced several benefits: shorter postoperative hospital stays (7.96 days vs. 8.70 days), fewer negative comments in nurses’ notes (1.13 vs 3.96), and reduced requirements for moderate and strong analgesics. While tree-view patients also had slightly lower scores for minor post-surgical complications, this difference wasn’t statistically significant. The study suggests that access to a natural view may provide a therapeutic effect on surgical patients, positively influencing their emotional state and ultimately aiding in their recovery.
