Physiological and Psychological Effects of Gardening Activity in Older Adults
Summary
This research paper explores how gardening can improve the health and mood of older adults. Forty women, each around 79 years old, participated in the study by engaging in both gardening activities and non-gardening tasks. During these activities, researchers measured the participants’ blood pressure and brain activity. Additionally, the participants answered questions to rate their anxiety and comfort levels after each activity.
The results showed that gardening significantly lowered the participants’ blood pressure and improved brain activity associated with relaxation. The participants reported feeling more relaxed and comfortable after gardening compared to the other tasks. This suggests that gardening can be a simple and effective way to enhance physical and emotional well-being for older adults.
